BESS Parks as Part of the Energy Transition – Prenner as Your Energy Storage Project Partner

The transformation of the energy system has accelerated the adoption of renewable energy, increasing the demand for reliable and flexible energy solutions. Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) parks provide an effective response to this challenge by balancing the electricity grid and enabling energy to be used more efficiently and cost-effectively.

Developing and constructing a BESS project is a multi-stage process that requires careful management of the entire project lifecycle. Prenner brings all aspects of project development and construction management within your reach, ensuring smooth and successful project delivery from start to finish.

Preliminary Studies and Site Selection

A successful project begins with selecting the right location and carrying out the necessary preliminary studies.

Prenner’s experts assess the suitability of potential sites from the perspectives of grid capacity, land use and logistics. At this stage, we also identify the permitting requirements, including the site’s planning status and any potential need for specific land-use planning decisions.

We conduct preliminary technical assessments and identify potential risks to ensure that the project starts from a solid foundation.

Project Planning and Permitting

Once the foundation has been established, the project moves into more detailed planning.

Prenner helps develop a realistic schedule and budget to support the investment decision. At this stage, we also manage the permitting process on behalf of the client.

A land-use agreement is established to provide the legal basis for implementing the project. A building permit is always required, while more extensive procedures, such as an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) or amendments to the local land-use plan, can usually be avoided.

We assess project feasibility, perform risk analyses and develop a stakeholder strategy to ensure that the project progresses smoothly.

Design Management and Contractor Tendering

At this stage, the role of the owner’s engineering and construction management consultant becomes particularly important.

We ensure that the technical design is both feasible and cost-effective. We tender the required civil and construction works on your behalf and prepare the necessary building permit drawings in-house.

When required, we can also provide electrical and automation engineering services together with our trusted partners.

Prenner manages the tendering process for equipment suppliers and contractors, negotiates contracts and ensures security of supply. We develop a procurement strategy tailored to the specific objectives of your project.

Construction Management and Site Management

Prenner’s SITE services ensure that construction progresses safely, on schedule and within the agreed budget.

We coordinate all contractors and act as the operational driving force of the project.

We supervise construction and installation work in accordance with strict quality requirements. We also ensure compliance with safety regulations and work to prevent unnecessary delays.

Coordination is crucial at this stage. We coordinate activities with parties such as the local distribution system operator, arrange the planning of necessary power outages and organise cable location services for existing underground infrastructure.

Potential challenges are identified and resolved quickly to keep the project on track.

Our Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QA/QC) processes ensure that all installations and structures meet stringent technical and regulatory requirements.

Commissioning and Documentation

The project culminates in commissioning.

Our coordination covers system testing, regulatory inspections and the start-up of the completed system.

Prenner DOCS services provide comprehensive project documentation, ensuring that the completed system is fully operational and compliant with all applicable regulatory requirements.

We also prepare documentation in accordance with Finland’s technical requirements for electricity storage systems (SJV), which is required before the system can be commissioned.
